LiveKit Cloud to self-hosted: assess the trade-off first

Considering a move from LiveKit Cloud? Start with your usage, bill and required features—not a server quote. I compare the operating costs and dependencies before recommending whether to stay on Cloud or plan a self-hosted migration.

Assessment: compare the whole operating picture

We start with bills, usage reports and workload assumptions. The comparison accounts for measured or estimated Cloud volumes and self-hosted compute, bandwidth, storage and retention, operations, redundancy, and amortized migration costs. Inputs are labeled by source and confidence; estimates are not presented as actual spend. Telephony and STT/LLM/TTS charges that would remain after moving the media server are kept separate, not counted as migration savings.

Alongside the numbers, we inventory features and dependencies that could affect the decision: which LiveKit services and workflows are in use, where agents and related components run, what operational responsibilities would move to your team, and which requirements need verification. The output records assumptions, gaps, risks, a comparison of options and a recommendation tied to your stated priorities. It does not promise a savings percentage, return on investment or payback period.

Start with a separately scoped assessment

The assessment has its own written scope and quote, based on the data available and the questions you need answered. It does not include production migration. If the evidence favors Cloud or a hybrid model, the assessment can end there; migration is not a predetermined outcome.

Implementation only if justified

If you choose self-hosting after the assessment, implementation is a separate engagement starting from $5,000. Before work begins, both sides sign the exact scope, acceptance criteria, staging and load-test plan, cutover approach, rollback conditions and handover deliverables. The plan is specific to your system and evidence; this is not a turnkey migration promise. Any scope or acceptance details not agreed in writing remain outside the work.

For a technical review of an existing self-hosted deployment, see the self-hosted LiveKit audit. You can also read the LiveKit production validation guide, the official self-hosting documentation, and current LiveKit pricing.

Relevant experience

My production experience is with LiveKit Cloud application backends; my self-hosted examples are lab work, not customer SFU operations. The scope reflects that distinction and does not include 24/7 support. Findings distinguish documented facts, your measurements, estimates and remaining validation work.

Compare hosting costs

To discuss an assessment, share the billing period and usage data you can provide, the workload shape, and the reason you are considering a change. Redact account identifiers and secrets. We will first agree what can be answered from the evidence and quote that scope separately.
